The Ultimate Guide to Measuring Your Inseam: A Must-Know for Every Shopper
Tired of constantly struggling to find the perfect fit when shopping for clothing? Whether you're on the tall side or a bit more petite, one essential measurement can make a world of difference – your inseam. In this blog post, we'll explore how to measure your inseam and why it's crucial for both tall and short shoppers.
Understanding the Inseam: What is it?
First things first, what exactly is the inseam? It's the measurement from the crotch to the bottom of the pant leg. Let's learn how to measure it!

Get the Right Tools: Grab a flexible measuring tape, a pair of well-fitting pants, and a friend (optional but helpful)
Put on Your Pants: It is easiest to accurately measure when wearing a pair of well-fitting pants
Stand Up Straight: Good posture is vital when measuring, the best way to do it is with your back against the wall and your feet shoulder-width apart
Measure from the Crotch: With the help of a friend or a mirror, place one end of the measuring tape at your crotch. Refer to the image to the left on the length!
Extend to the Hem: Extend the measuring tape along the inside of your leg, following the contour. Ensure the tape is straight and that it goes all the way to the bottom of your pant leg.
Take Note: Record the measurement. This is your inseam length
Why Does Your Inseam Matter?
Now, you might be wondering why measuring your inseam is so important, I think images are more powerful than words in this case. As you can see in the above photo, Maya and I both have very different inseams. Knowing how to shop for your inseam is crucial!
For Tall Shoppers:
Finding the Right Length: If you're tall, finding pants that are long enough can be a never-ending quest. Measuring your inseam helps you locate clothing that fits your unique height, preventing the disappointment of pants that look more like capris
Proportional Fit: It's not just about the length; it's also about the proportion. Clothing designed for taller individuals often offers a more flattering fit in the torso and hips
Pro tip: If you're above 5'10", your inseam is probably 34"-38" around, mine is 36"!
For Petite Shoppers:
Avoiding Hemming: If you're on the shorter side, measuring your inseam can help you avoid the often costly and time-consuming process of hemming pants - unless you read our other blog which will teach you how!! Regardless, knowing your inseam makes sure you know exactly what length to look for
Proper Fit: Properly fitted pants will make you look taller and leaner. Knowing your inseam ensures your clothes don't overwhelm your frame
Pro tip: online store size guides often have inseam listed, and it is the best way to know if the length is correct!
For Everyone:
Better Online Shopping: When shopping online, you can use your inseam measurement to ensure you're getting the right size. No more guessing or relying solely on "short" or "tall" labels
Confidence in Your Style: When your clothes fit just right, you'll feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin, enhancing your overall style
Measuring your inseam is a small step that can make a big difference in your shopping experience. Whether you're tall, petite, or somewhere in between, understanding this measurement will help you find clothes that fit you perfectly, no matter your height. So, grab that measuring tape and start shopping with confidence!
